Importance of Calcium
Photo thanks to Caltrate assists in preventing Osteoporosis Calcium is important to help prevent osteoporosis
Calcium is needed for strong bones. It is also needed for your heart, muscles and nerves to function properly and for your blood to clot normally.

An inadequate calcium intake is thought to play a significant role in contributing to the development of osteoporosis. However, national nutrition surveys have shown that many women and young girls consume less than half the amount of calcium recommended for growth and maintenance of healthy bones.

Each day we lose some calcium in the urine and faeces and to a lesser extent through perspiration. These losses must be balanced by consuming adequate amounts of calcium. If the level of calcium in the blood drops below normal, the body takes what it needs from the bone, thereby depleting the calcium reserves.

The body's demand for calcium is greater during certain stages of life.
